Yerevan - Armenia yesterday welcomed last week's tentative step by the US towards recognising accusations that Turks carried out genocide against Armenians in 1915. Turkey has strongly condemned the decision by a House of Representatives International Relations sub-committee.

The sub-committee approved a non-binding resolution for President Clinton to "characterise the systematic and deliberate annihilation of 1,500,000 Armenians as genocide". The Armenian Foreign Ministry said: "This is a serious step towards determining the truth."
