A woman was questioned by garda∅ for several hours yesterday as the search continued for two armed men who stole an estimated £8,000 from a rural post office in Co Cork which they had raided earlier in the day.
The two men, wearing anoraks and balaclavas, burst into Farran Post Office on the main Cork-Macroom Road at 9 a.m., not long after a Garda escort had overseen a delivery of money to the post office.
The raid was over within minutes and as the men escaped, at least one shot was fired.
The raiders made their getaway in a stolen Saab car, registration number 00 WH 4841, which had been stolen last week from the Carrigaline area.
Garda∅ asked for anyone who may have noticed the car in the Farran vicinity on Wednesday last to come forward.
It is understood that the two men drove the car towards the Donoughmore area of north Cork, but by then the alarm had been raised and Garda checkpoints were in place.
As they approached one checkpoint, they abandoned the car and made off into the dense woodland around Donoughmore.
The Garda helicopter was called in and armed garda∅ joined the search on foot.
According to garda∅ in Cork, a definite line of inquiry was being pursued last night.
The woman who was taken to Bandon Garda station for questioning was later released.
