An off-duty garda who was confronted by a heavily-armed man at his home in Castlerea, Co Roscommon, early yesterday succeeded in partially disarming his assailant before telephoning for help. The incident occurred at Knockore when the man, who was known to the garda, knocked on the door. He was carrying a shotgun, had a rifle over one shoulder and was wearing a gunbelt containing cartridges.
When the man eventually handed over his weapons he was arrested under the Offences Against the State Act.
