Jerusalem - Mr Moshe Arens was sworn in as Defence Minister yesterday, taking the place of Mr Yitzhak Mordechai, who was dismissed for planning to run as a candidate for prime minister.

Mr Arens (73) was nominated by the Prime Minister, Mr Benjamin Netanyahu, after failing in his attempt to lead their right-wing Likud party into a general election on May 17th.
