Rome - The Catholic Archbishop of Freetown and four Xaverian missionaries, kidnapped by Sierra Leone rebels, have escaped their captors, the Rome-based missionary news agency MISNA said yesterday. Archbishop Joseph Henry Ganda was abducted around January 12th-13th during fighting in Freetown between rebels and the West African ECOMOG force backing President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah. Thousands of displaced Sierra Leoneans joined long queues yesterday to try to get a share of emergency food aid after more than two weeks of devastating battles.
