A £4 million aquarium which is under construction in Salthill is due to open to the public some time next month. Work on the Galway Atlantaquarium had been delayed, partly due to the slow process of getting aquarium experts from England and Italy to the Galway site to instal special glass for the huge fish tanks. There will be a strong emphasis on salmon in the 22,000 sq ft aquarium, and an unusual feature will be that it will contain both fresh water and sea water tanks.
Although the aquarium is being developed privately, it has been agreed with Galway Corporation to market and promote both the new aquarium and the revamped Leisureland complex together.
