A FIANNA Fail MEP, Mr Brian Crowley, has apologised unreservedly for a Hitler reference he made in the European Parliament chamber on Wednesday after which he was accused of offending German MEPs.

In a speech asserting the supremacy of the parliament he had said: "Let us not forget that when Hitler wanted to take over and impose Nazism on Germany that he used parliamentary democracy, so called, at the time and what is happening here, by refusing to allow people speak within the parliament, by refusing to ensure that people abide by so called treaties and the constitution of this parliament of the European Union, we are flying in the face of what we should be doing and setting examples to people."

Mr Crowley said yesterday that he had realised after he spoke that "the analogy was the wrong one" and he had gone back into the parliament chamber and apologised.
