In our edition of 20th February 1996, we stated that a man injured in the recent London bus bombing was a member of the IRA and linked him to that bombing.

This was entirely without foundation and untrue.

The Irish Times fully accepts that the injured man, Brendan Woolhead, was a completely innocent victim of the bombing. He had not and never had any connection whatsoever with the IRA.

The Irish Times deeply regrets the publication of this article and apologises unreservedly to Mr Wool head for the pain and distress caused to him.
