Luanda - Angolan government troops have seized control of the southern town of Kuvango from UNITA rebels, the military said yesterday.

The army said it took Kuvango at the weekend, without giving casualty figures, while independent sources said that heavy fighting meanwhile took place around JambaMineira and at Dongo in the same province, Huila.

Thousands of civilians had fled in the past week, the independent sources said.
