ADELAIDE - More than 2,000 koalas are to be shipped from a Kangaroo Island to the Australian mainland in a move condemned by environmentalists. The koalas will be sterilised first and only half are expected to survive the journey. Some will go to mainland sanctuaries and the rest to overseas zoos or wildlife parks.
Environmentalists say it is being done because politicians haven't the stomach to cull the animals and thereby save them from starvation in their island habitat.
