Johannesburg - An internal committee of South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) has urged President Thabo Mbeki to abandon his scepticism and acknowledge that HIV causes AIDS, newspapers said yesterday.
Newspapers of the Independent Group said the appeal to Mr Mbeki, who so far has refused to acknowledge the link, was contained in a confidential document leaked to the Cape Times in Cape Town.
"The predominant scientific view that HIV causes AIDS is the view that the ANC and its leadership and its membership have to publicly express," the newspapers quoted from the document.
