An Post has said that no suitable applicant was found to take over the Post Office at Bunacurry, on Achill, Co Mayo, and that there will be no post office in the village from the end of the month.
Ms Anna McHugh, a spokeswoman for An Post, said on Friday that despite three advertisements by the company over the last number of months, no suitable applicant was found.
"We have no choice now but to close the post office on August 31st and we will not be providing any postal agency in Bunacurry," Ms McHugh added.
"Customers can use neighbouring post offices in Keel and on Achill Sound."
The announcement of the closure has caused widespread disappointment and anger. Local Independent councillor, Mr Michael Holmes, said it was a bad day for the village.
"An Post will have to make the taking up of a post office in a rural area a more attractive offer for potential business people," Mr Holmes said. "If people are not suitably remunerated for the work, it's no wonder that no one will take up the post office job."
