Amnesty International has appealed to the international community - especially the United States - to seek out those behind the attacks in New York and Washington in a spirit of "justice" not "vengeance."
In a statement released this evening, the organisation said the violent attacks suffered by the USA represented the gravest violation of the most basic of human rights and it called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. In seeking justice for the victims, the human rights organisation said the world must exercise the highest respect for the rights of all individuals.
"International solidarity with the victims is not about seeking revenge, but about co-operating within the rule of law in bringing those responsible to justice. Scapegoating individuals or communities will achieve nothing," the Amnesty statement said.
Amnesty called on the United States in particular to respect human rights in their hunt for the perpetrators of the attacks, by not detaining or arresting individuals solely on the basis of their race, ethnicity, religion or national origin.
