Cinemagoers are having to book days in advance to see Independence Day, which comes with a personal recommendation from President Clinton. The film has taken £530,360 at the Irish box office since opening last Thursday.

"Our three shows on Saturday and Sunday evening, each to 1,074 seats, were sold out by 3 p.m. each day," Mr John Holihan, general manager at Virgin Cinema in Dublin, told The Irish Times. "We have had to turn a lot away."

The alien thriller, starring Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, has broken records since opening in the US on July 3rd.
