London - Plans by British Airways and Virgin Atlantic to strengthen their cockpit doors in the wake of the September 11th attacks were criticised as "ill-conceived and potentially dangerous" by airline pilots yesterday.

Mr Christopher Darke, leader of the airline pilots' association (Balpa), said that its 7,000 members were seriously concerned about new security measures.
