A Boeing 767 aircraft carrying more than 200 passengers and crew was diverted to Ireland for a "precautionary security check" yesterday afternoon.

Delta flight 77 was en route from Istanbul to Kennedy Airport in New York when it was redirected to Shannon at 4 p.m.

The search was carried out on passengers and baggage, but nothing untoward was found. Shannon Airport management last night told The Irish Times: "We can confirm that a search of the plane and its baggage was carried out. At this stage no arrests have been made, and the flight will continue on to New York."
