Mr Bertie Ahern was speaking after a meeting with President Glafcos Clerides during a three-day official visit to Cyprus.

He confirmed that he had spoken with the British Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair, by telephone last night.

"We agreed our officials will meet today in Downing Street and hopefully over the next 48 hours or so there will be talks between myself and Sinn Fein, and between the British government and Sinn Fein," he said.

"There are still three issues - demilitarisation, decommissioning, and policing," Mr Ahern said.
