The Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, has said a difficulty with our tax system was that people on relatively low pay levels could drift into higher tax rates.

He said the Government would have to look at allowances and tax bands to ensure people were not going on the high rate of tax at relatively low incomes. There was also a need to give people an incentive to work and to work overtime if necessary.

Mr Ahern was speaking on the RTE programme, The Week in Politics.
