Andre Agassi beat last year's Wimbledon finalist Xavier Malisse in his third round tie and also secured his 50th match win at Roland Garros today.

His 6-4 7-5 7-5 victory over last year's Wimbledon Malisse allowed him to overtake five-times champion Bjorn Borg, who won 49 matches in Paris.

But the American is still six matches short of Argentine Guillermo Vilas, who has 56 victories to his name at Roland Garros.

Agassi, the second seed and 1999 champion, was helped byMalisse making 63 unforced errors, but the American was stillimpressed with the Belgian's performance.

"He's such a talented player. Sometimes you watch him playand you're not watching the ball," he said. "He came up with some great shots.

"It could easily have gone to five sets. And three is a lotbetter than five."

Agassi should know, having battled his way out of a trickyfive-set marathon against Croat Mario Ancic in the previousround.

In the women's draw pop seed and world number one Serena Williams smashed Barbara Schett of Austria out of the French Open 6-0 6-0 in the third round.

The American was not at her best but was still far too strong for the hapless Schett, who won just 20 points in all, and only six in the second set.

"I just played very good today," said the defending champion in the 40 minutes of a slightly embarrassing contest.

In the fourth round, Williams plays Japan's Ai Sugiyama.
