The Sinn Fein leader has said people need to "calm down" in relation to the IRA's statement that it would not be decommissioning its weapons. He said he "neither wrote nor was responsible for the IRA statement".
After a hastily arranged meeting at Sinn Fein's request with the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, in Dublin, Mr Gerry Adams said the Taoiseach had raised decommissioning briefly and "not in any heavy way".
Responding to remarks made earlier by Mr Ahern that some elements of the IRA statement on decommissioning were "provocative", Mr Adams said: "I said yesterday that people need to calm down, because what on earth do people expect the IRA to be saying? I do think the IRA position on the referenda was very fair and on all the other business, what Sinn Fein is about is making progress on every issue which needs to be advanced."
Mr Adams said it was a time of transition and "we need to make sure that the transition moves speedily and in a thorough way." Mr Ahern had raised decommissioning, but only briefly and "in no heavy way".
