Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has appealed to voters not to vote against the children’s rights referendum as a way of “punishing” the Government.

Mr Adams said he would appeal to everyone concerned about the welfare and protection of children to support the proposed constitutional amendment.

“I have…met some people during recent canvasing who have said they intend voting against the amendment as a way of punishing the Government for its bad policies. Their anger at the Government is understandable but to vote against the referendum for this reason would be wrong,” he said.

Broadcaster Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh joined Fine Gael Ministers Leo Varadkar and Frances Fitzgerald to promote a Yes vote this morning. Mr Ó Muircheartaigh said Minister for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs Jimmy Deenihan had asked him to participate.

Yes side campaigners canvassed on Grafton Street in Dublin this morning.

They included former Supreme Court judge Catherine McGuinness, broadcaster Olivia O’Leary and Barnardos chief executive Fergus Finlay.
