The president of Waterford Chamber of Commerce has called on a Green Party activist to withdraw an appeal against a €50 million development in the city.

Mr Bobby O'Keeffe wants a meeting with Mr Brendan McCann, who has appealed against a decision by Waterford City Council to grant permission for the development at Railway Square, which features retail, office and residential space. It includes measures to protect a section of the historic city walls and towers.

Mr O'Keeffe said that Mr McCann had succeeded in raising awareness of his concerns about the plan, but should now withdraw the appeal which, he said, threatened the development.

"There has long been a sense in Waterford that the city doesn't get its fair share of Government investment. Here we have private interests willing to invest over €50 million in a derelict area of our city and one individual can stand in their way," he said.
