Abortion to be issue in election, says group

Abortion would become a major issue in the run-up to the general election, the Mother and Child Campaign said yesterday.

Abortion would become a major issue in the run-up to the general election, the Mother and Child Campaign said yesterday.

Mr Justin Barrett, spokesman for the group, which campaigned for a No vote, said he would be seeking guarantees from Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael that they would not legislate for the X case.

He said he would be intensifying his campaign to introduce a Constitutional amendment protecting the life of the unborn from the moment of conception to natural birth.

"We have been asking for this for 10 years. And we will get it, no matter how long it takes. If it takes 30 years we will get it," he said.

He said his group told the Government last October that pro-life supporters could not, and would not, vote for the proposal unless crucial changes were made to it.

"What's happened here today is that radical pro-abortionists who want abortion on demand have naturally voted against this and the majority of our supporters, the pro-life people, have also voted No," he said.

Mr Barrett predicted that pro-life groups which had differed on this proposal would resolve their differences and campaign together again.
