FOOD COMPANY Glanbia said yesterday it is to cut 50 jobs following the completion of a strategic review of its operations. The majority of the jobs will go at the company’s head office at City West in Dublin.
The company’s chief executive, Colin Gordon, said the “unavoidable” redundancies were necessary to maximise the competitiveness of the business. He said management would consult with unions to agree redundancy terms.
It is understood the company will initially try to cut the jobs on a voluntary basis.
Glanbia, which comprises an Irish consumer foods operation and an international cheese-manufacturing and nutritional ingredients group, warned this month that lower world demand for dairy products due to the global economic crisis would result in difficult trading in 2009.
Elsewhere, up to 40 jobs are to go after a Belfast financial company announced it is to close, citing a decline in the use of chequebooks. ClearCo, which processed cheques for the Bank of Ireland and the Allied Irish Bank group, is to cease operations by the end of summer.
A world-renowned artists’ retreat in Co Monaghan is to cut back on staff following a drop in its income. Two people are to lose their jobs at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Newbliss as part of a restructuring. The centre is based in Annamakerrig, and currently employs 11 people.
