NEW YORK - A New York City jury yesterday found that the subway gunman, Bernhard Goetz, was not justified in critically wounding a young black man on a New York City subway train and ordered him to pay $43 million in damages.
The jury deliberated for a day before deciding Goetz should pay Darrell Cabey, who has been paralysed since the shooting in December, 1984. Cabey (30) sued for $25 million in compensation and $25 million in punitive damages.
The civil court jury said Goetz had acted recklessly and deliberately inflicted emotional distress on Cabey in the shooting of four teens. The incident became one of the most celebrated crimes in New York City history.
