Three men were released by gardai in Co Donegal last night and a file is being sent to the DPP after a man was killed when a fight started at a disco in Buncrana late on Sunday night.
Mr Damian Gill (19), from Clonmany on the Inishowen Peninsula, was found with serious injuries on a grass area in front of the town's library shortly after midnight. Efforts to resuscitate him failed, and he died at the scene. Mr Gill was home for the weekend from Co Wexford, where he worked.
Gardai said yesterday they believed an altercation involving at least five young men started at the Arch Disco Bar, a night-club on the town's main street. It then spilled out on to the road at the back of the disco, where Mr Gill was found.
Insp Greg Sullivan, from Buncrana, said yesterday evening they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident "at this time", but they had not yet established how the row started.
Mr Gill's body was removed to Letterkenny General Hospital where a post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday afternoon by the State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison. Two other men were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The three men, who were arrested just before lunchtime yesterday, are all from the area and were taken to Buncrana and Burnfoot Garda stations. Two are in their late teens and one is in his early 20s. One man was arrested shortly after being released from hospital.
Gardai yesterday appealed for witnesses who were either at the disco or in the street outside between 11.45 p.m. and 12.20 a.m. to come forward. There was a large crowd at the night-club at the time, and Insp Sullivan said he believed a lot of people could help them with inquiries. He said there was a good response early yesterday from the local community.
Two local taximen were the first to discover Mr Gill. Mr Noel McGuinness said he and his colleague saw Mr Gill and then another injured youth lying nearby behind a tree.
"The man who died was moaning when we reached him. Then we realised there was a second man behind a tree and we went over to him because we thought he was in worse shape, but he began to come round.
"Then we went back to the first man and tried to resuscitate him, but he just mumbled a few words and died. It was awful," Mr McGuinness said.
A crowd quickly gathered and a Garda patrol arrived within minutes. A doctor was called and Mr Gill was pronounced dead at the scene.
There have been a number of violent incidents on the streets of Buncrana on weekend nights over recent months, and some locals and town councillors complained yesterday that there were not enough gardai on the streets at these times.
Gardai yesterday rejected suggestions that the area was not adequately policed and said they did not believe that Sunday night's incident was in any way linked to previous disturbances.
