270 years on, they still gather for the regatta at Athlone

It is probably true that the delights of the river Shannon are better known and appreciated by people from far away than by those who dwell on its shores. Stop off for a while at any of the locks on the waterway and you are more likely to hear Dutch, French, German or Italian voices than those of Irish people.

Once a year, however, the people of Athlone pay their respects to the river when the annual regatta is held along its banks in the town.

There is a long tradition of regattas in Athlone; we know from old documents that one was held there in 1731. The venues for these summer gatherings varied, but Ballyglass and Galey Bay, just north of the town, were the most popular spots for the event.

The writer John Keegan, in a diary published early in the last century, records such an event, as does the Freeman's Journal of August 1862. That regatta featured a schooner race over six miles with prize money of £5 and £1, a sprit and foresail event over five miles, a two-oared race and a single rowing match.

This year's regatta will be on Sunday, June 27th, and the prize for the super-raft race, not over five miles but over 1,500 metres, will not be £5 but a keg of Heineken, brewed by the sponsors of the event.

There is also a general category raft race over 750 metres, and, most popular of all, a fancy dress event, which is raced over 250 metres. The day will start with a children's fishing competition organised by Athlone Anglers' Club. The main waterborne events get under way at 2.15 p.m. Music will be supplied by the band of the Western Command, with the third Shannon swim beginning at 1.30 p.m followed by the men's race at 2.30 p.m. The winner of the men's race will receive the Diarmuid Murtagh Perpetual Cup, which commemorates the man regarded as the father of Athlone swimming.

The Regatta will also feature Tonnta, a street theatre group which will bring its own brand of magic, juggling, street theatre and stilt-walking to the streets. Tomorrow, June 18th, is the closing date for entries for the swimming competitions. Entry forms can be obtained by calling 0902-73173.
