A passenger bus has hit a wall at the entrance of a tunnel in eastern Turkey, killing 27 people and injuring 33.

The crash happened outside the city of Erzincan, about 430 miles east of the capital Ankara.

Authorities suspect the bus driver may have fallen asleep, the Anatolia news agency reported. No tyre marks were found on the road at the scene.

The driver was among those killed.

Many of the injured passengers had been sleeping and could not recall the crash.

The bus, which belonged to a private Turkish company, had been travelling overnight to Erzincan from the central city of Sivas, about 155 miles to the west, Anatolia said.

It crashed about 18 miles short of its destination. PA
