Colombo - Mobs stormed an open prison in central Sri Lanka yesterday and beat to death 24 Tamil inmates in an orgy of violence that also left another man dead, police said. Hundreds of people, from the majority Sinhalese population, attacked inmates with knives, sticks and stones, police said.
Following the massacre President Chandrika Kumaratunga rushed investigators to the trouble spot in Bandarawela, 210 km east of Colombo.
