Dar Es Salaam - At least 21 people died and 50 were wounded in clashes between rival miners of the semiprecious Tanzanite gemstone mine in northern Tanzania, newspapers reported.

The clashes between the ethnic Sonje and Maasai people of Mererani region occurred on Wednesday after Sonje youths stole gemstones worth thousands of dollars from a miner. His Maasai work-mates retaliated by attacking Sonje villagers and looting their houses - beating at least 21 people to death.
