KINSHASA - Eighteen people drowned in a crowded swimming pool at a resort near the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Sunday following a rape and shooting incident, police said.
The tragedy at the Nsele resort, about 40 km outside Kinshasa, occurred when soldiers fired in the air in a bid to save a girl who was being raped. Panic swept through the pool, packed mainly with students and schoolchildren, resulting in the deaths. - (Reuter)
