Johannesburg - The death toll in floods that destroyed homes and roads in the eastern port city of Durban rose to 17 on Thursday, South African police have reported.
The floods caused mudslides and washed away homes and roads after an estimated eight inches of rain fell on parts of Durban in 24 hours.
The rains destroyed hundreds of flimsy mud and tin dwellings in impoverished settlements ringing the city, making some 2,000 people homeless.
