Firemen have rescued 16 people, including one child, from a fire at an apartment block in Dublin city centre this afternoon.

They were rescued from a third-storey window when the blaze engulfed the downstairs lobby of the building on Ormond Quay.

Ten adults and the child have been taken to St James Street hospital where they are believed to be suffering from smoke inhalation.

Eight units of the fire brigade brought the blaze, which broke out at 2pm, under control. The fire resulted in the diversion of all traffic heading along the north quays at Inns Quay.
