Police have arrested 156 people in Germany after clashes between fans ahead of the World Cup qualifier.

A spokeswoman for the British Consulate-General in Munich says 100 hundred of those were Germans and most of the rest were British.

A small number of Austrians were also involved.

Meanwhile, by kick-off, a total of 79 people had been processed by British police at ports and airports under new legislation.

A spokesman says 58 of those were prevented from travelling to Germany - 33 were given bans, nine have bans pending and 16 had their hearings adjourned.

But 21 cases against suspected hooligans were unsuccessful, meaning they were free to travel.

A further 18 Britons have been arrested for offences not under the new legislation, most of them in Munich.
