2. October 2nd - 6.04 p.m.

Shoppers Food Warehouse, Wheaton, Maryland.

James Martin (55): Father of an 11-year-old boy, and leader of his Boy Scout troop, he was a program analyst at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. A Vietnam veteran, he was known as a Civil War buff and an amateur geologist. He was in the car park of the grocery store when he was fatally shot.

3. October 3rd - 7.41 a.m.

Fitzgerald's car dealer, White Flint, Maryland.

James "Sonny" Buchanan (39): Landscape gardener who usually took care of the grounds at a car dealership on Saturdays. This time, he was mowing the lawn on a Thursday when he was shot dead. The car dealer described Mr Buchanan as a poet who worked with underprivileged children.

4. October 3rd - 8.12 a.m.

Mobil petrol station, Aspen Hill, Maryland.

Prem Kumar Walekar (54): A part-time taxi driver, he started his day early on Thursday so he could enjoy the nice weather later on. He was shot and killed while filling his taxi with petrol. Born in Bombay, he came to the US at the age of 18 to go to college.

5. October 3rd - 8.37 a.m.

Post Office, Silver Spring, Maryland.

Sarah Ramos (34): She got off a bus at a shopping centre, sat down on a bench to read, and was killed by a shot to the head. Ms Ramos and her husband were from El Salvador. They moved to the US three years ago.

6. October 3rd - 9.58 a.m.

Shell petrol station, Kensington, Maryland.

Lori Ann Lewis-Rivera (25): A neighbour says she was a "very nice and sweet lady" who doted on her three-year-old daughter. She was originally from Oregon and had trained as a nanny. She married Nelson Rivera, a Honduran immigrant.

7. October 3rd - 9.20 p.m.

Street corner, Washington DC.

Pascal Charlot (72): A carpenter who left Haiti for the US. He lived locally in a terraced house with his wife and was said to be a popular handyman. He was shot dead while crossing the street.

8. October 4th - 2.30 p.m.

Michaels shop, Spotsylvania , Virginia.

A 43-year-old man was shot and wounded as he loaded packages in the parking lot. He is in stable condition.

9. October 7th - 8.08 a.m.

Benjamin Tasker School, Bowie, Maryland.

A 13-year-old African-American boy shot and critically wounded as he was left off for school.

10. October 9th - 8.18 p.m.

Sunoco petrol station, Manassas, Virginia.

Dean Harold Meyers (53): A 53-year-old civil engineer, he was gunned down at a petrol station in Manassas, Virginia. His neighbour, Suzanne Iverson, a teacher, said she had known Mr Meyers for 25 years as a most unobtrusive man who lived alone.

11. October 11th - 9.30 a.m.

Exxon (Esso) petrol station, Massaponax, Virginia.

Kenneth Bridges (53): A father of six from Philadelphia, he had co-founded a marketing company and was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. He was heavily involved in promoting black ownership of business. He was shot dead while fuelling his car.

12. October 14th - 9.15 p.m.

Home Depot, Falls Church, Virginia.

Linda Franklin (47): Shot dead as she and her husband loaded the car. A pregnant mother of two and a cancer survivor, she was initially a teacher but more recently worked at the FBI.

13. October 19th - 7.59 p.m.

Ponderosa Steakhouse, Ashland, Virginia.

A 37-year-old man was seriously wounded.
