Sao Paulo - At least 12 prisoners died yesterday during a riot at a maximum-security prison in the Brazilian capital Brasilia, writes Nicole Veash.

Some of the prisoners burned to death, while others died of knife wounds during a violent turf battle between rival gangs. The rebellion occurred in the Papuda prison, formerly known as Nucleo de Custodia, in the early hours of yesterday morning.
