Savannah: In Savannah, Georgia, at least 12 people were injured after a car sped through a road junction, ploughing into members of a marching band and spectators who lined the parade route.

It was not immediately known how many were struck, but officials said 12 people were taken to local hospitals. News of their conditions was not immediately available. The injured included several members of a marching band who were in front of the car.

Other victims were pedestrians gathered to watch the parade, police said.

The car was attempting to pass another group in the parade when it sped through the marching band and into a crowd of spectators near the centre of Savannah, said police spokesman Mr Bucky Burnsed.

The car, with green shamrocks taped on its sides, had its windscreen smashed. The driver was questioned by police.
