Over 100 people are feared dead after rebels and paramilitary forces clashed in Columbia near the Panamanian border.

Ten deaths have already been confirmed but Columbian authorities believe the death toll will rise.

The Columbian army says its troops are entering the combat zone near the north-western town of Riosucio.

"We know there are dead on each side, but we won't have any exact figures until we see the evidence," said General Fernando Tapias, the chief of Colombia's armed forces.

Riosucio Mayor Ricardo Victoria said civilians fleeing the village of Cano Seco claim as many as 150 or 200 people were killed.
