Paris - Left-wing militants said yesterday that up to 100,000 people would demonstrate in the French Riviera resort of Nice on the eve of the EU summit there next month.

Mr Patrice Spadoni, spokesman for a coalition of groups planning demonstrations against the summit, said the December 6th rally would be followed by a smaller protest outside the conference centre on the opening day of the summit.

He said the protesters opposed a new Charter of Fundamental Rights to be proclaimed by the Nice summit and a reform to curb national vetos and replace them with qualified majority voting.
