Attackers fired rockets at a pickup truck ferrying passengers to a northern Afghan town, killing 10 people, including two children, according to a broadcast report this evening.

The truck was carrying 12 people to Haibak in Samangan province when it was attacked 38 miles east of there Thursday evening, the provincial head of security, Rahmatullah, told Afghan state TV.

As many as nine attackers fired three rockets at the vehicle, he said. Five men, three women and two children were killed.

Another man was injured while the remaining passenger escaped unharmed, said Rahmatullah, who, like many Afghans, uses only one name.

The attackers escaped.
