Slip into something white and summery with Mary Dowey
I don't think I can remember a year when so many attention-grabbing, affordable white wines exploded on to the market all at once. Suddenly, it's summer on the shelves.
Have a hunt around and you will find a whole assortment of lively, fruity, refreshing wines with the ability to conjure up a sunny mood even when dark clouds are glowering overhead. Boy, do we need them. Pure white magic.
The 10 recommended this week all brought a smile to my face - partly because they immediately made me feel as if I were somewhere about 15 degrees warmer than Rathgar, and partly because they are, without exception, terrific value.
They come from a pretty wide range of countries, and an even wider selection of grape varieties, so there's no room for boredom. And as most are unoaked and utterly quaffable, you can knock back a glass or two in the garden without necessarily having to produce a meal at the same time. Get stuck in. mdowey@irish-times.ie
