The Tivoli Gardens (tivoli.dk/en; €16) is a twinkly fairytale in the centre of the city. It dates back to 1843, is the second oldest amusement park in the world, has a rollercoaster from 1914 still in operation and there are 500,000 of those twinkly lights. Even Walt Disney loved it.

Check-in at the centrally-located Andersen (andersen-hotel.dk/en; rooms from €200) and you get your room for 24 hours, no matter what time you arrive. Genius. The rooms are a mix of minimal Scandi-chic and bright colours. The atmosphere is relaxed.

Noma might be closed for now but Michelin stars remain around most corners. If you want to sample the fare, reserve in advance to get a spot. Otherwise, try a smørrebrød feast at Din Nye Ven (dinnyeven.dk), in Indre. Mackerel and smoked cream cheese stacked high on rye bread.

One of the 20 craft beers on tap at the Nørrebro brewpub Brus (tapperietbrus.dk). A bright space, long bar, state-of-the-art brewing facilities and constant flavour experimentation. And brunch to boot.

Illums Bolighus (illumsbolighus.dk) was founded in 1925 and described as the “Moma of modern living” in the 1950s. The shop stocks the best of Danish design – lamps, bowls, sofas, clothing and accessories. Christmas is sorted.
