Nestled on the banks of Lough Meelagh in Co Roscommon, Kilronan Castle’s status as the county’s go-to destination hotel has been in no doubt for quite some time, but that wasn’t always the case.
The Gothic manor was lived in and maintained by the Tenison family from 1803, before it fell into disrepair, and was restored by the Hanly Group in 2006.
Architecturally, the draw is the deft incorporation of a modern wing into the castle’s original structure. This newer element of the hotel incorporates their spa, which offers a wealth of options: thermal suites, hot and cold vitality pools, hydrotherapy showers, tropical rain showers, aroma light-therapy and private chill-out suites, incorporating Jacuzzis.
Kilronan’s restaurant, however, is arguably its best asset. Australian executive head chef David Porter, chef of the year at last year’s Irish Hotel Awards, has crafted a delicious five-course dining experience in the Douglas Hyde Restaurant. One night’s B&B and the full dining experience is currently on special offer, starting at €119. A one-night stay with spa-package special starts at €195.
Lisbon Calling
Fast becoming one of the coolest destinations in Europe, Lisbon boasts the arrival of a new boutique hotel this season. Tucked away in the corner of Praça do Município, the 28-room AlmaLusa Baixa/Chiado offers guests a taste of Portuguese culture. Formerly an army barracks, the 18th-century building is steeped in history topped off with mod cons and local artisanal design features. With their Delfina restaurant and an app to help guests make the most of their stay, a stay here is a cut above the rest. Stay in a double room from €165 per night; almalusahotels.com.
Cream Of Connaught
For the ultimate Afternoon Tea this autumn, look no further than Ashford Castle. The estate has been serving the traditional meal since 1868 and now its head pastry chef Paula Stakelum has created a contemporary menu, with a nod to the Cong castle's tradition. Served in the Connaught Room, guests can expect Irish Wagyu Beef and Cucumber sandwiches served on the castle's unique sourdough and delicate desserts like their vanilla scented éclair and chocolate torte. Afternoon Tea is served daily at selected times from €50 per person, plus a service charge. Visit ashfordcastle.com or phone 094 9546003 for bookings.
Westend App
Galway’s west end, home to some of the city’s best restaurants and pubs, has developed its own interactive app to help bring the neighbourhood to life. The app aims to give tourists and visitors the inside track on where to stay, eat and explore, with interactive walking map trails and audio links noting the area’s historical and cultural points. Download Galway’s Westend now on the App Store.
