Its artist owner Lars Stroschen calls this a "habitable work of art. A magnet for creative individuals, those who see things differently." That's something you will do literally from a flying bed on a slanted floor in one of the rooms, or a bed roped to rafters. Each room is decorated differently, many with reused elements, such as the Barn Room. Doubles from €79.

Once carrying 14,500 litres of wine, these barrels now hold two sleeping people. The barrels were shipped from Switzerland to the northern Netherlands town of Stavoren, beside the sea. They are part of a hotel that also has standard rooms but offers those seeking a barrel of laughs to "Slapen in een Wijnvat", according to the local lingo. Doubles from €119.50.

Art college graduate Andreas Strauss turned a pipe-dream into a reality when he converted these drainage systems into neat, cheap accommodation for short-stay tourists, including kayakers on the passing Danube. The 2m diameter pipes contain a double bed, storage space, electrical socket and have a small round window. You pay whatever you wish to stay here.
