Live like a local: Berlin

Enjoy good German food, and beer, and take in some people-watching

Saturday morning Start at the Kreuzberg war memorial for a view over Berlin, then stroll down the Bergmannstrasse (above). Stop for coffee in Barcomi's Deli or for food at the Markthalle. The adjacent Marheinekeplatz has a flea market. Relax with a home-brewed beer at the Brauhaus Südstern. Saturday evening For an old Berlin pub try Henne in Kreuzberg. They only serve roast chicken, but you won't want anything else. Max & Moritz on Oranienstrasse is also cozy, with more Berlin options. The Würgeengel will end the evening in style or, if you want a Berlin dive, try Möbel Olfe nearby. Sunday morning After brunch on the Van Loon boat on the Landwehr canal, it's a short stroll to the Berlinische Galerie. Across town the CO Galerie offers photography and people watching. The nearby Cafe am Neuen See has a beer garden and boat rental. Sunday evening After jazz in Quasimodo or A-Trane, enjoy supper at the Paris Bar. The elegant Savoy Hotel bar offers night caps followed by a stroll along the leafy Ku'damm boulevard.
