Junior skiers:There are few things more frustrating for the adult skier trying to come to grips with the whole "snowplough" business or figuring out how to get up after falling than to see a gaggle of tiny tots effortlessly gliding down the slopes without poles or any sign of fear.

It doesn’t always come naturally to children, though, and many an expensive ski holiday has been spoiled by small children refusing to go near the slopes or even put on their boots.

While Irish skiers are hampered in pre-ski preparation by the lack of snow here, the Ski Club of Ireland in Kilternan, Co Dublin offers classes on its man-made slopes for all ages and, for children, it gets them used to the idea of the equipment, the speed and some basic, essential techniques.

For children from four to seven years there’s a kindergarten club with lessons based on fun and safety – €80 for four lessons on Sundays. Bring strong gloves and wear warm clothes and long socks (because of the boots).

As children in this age group will most likely spend the holiday skiing in a kindergarten club in the resort it’s a good way of giving them experience of this sort of group skiing.

For older children the Saturday and Sunday classes last for 75 minutes and run in blocks of four for €80.

The same clothing advice applies.
