Before this country was swamped with fishnet-loving, scarlet lipstick-wearing singers, there was one cabaret diva really worth listening to. More than 10 years ago, Jeannette Byrne regularly held court with Jack L and the Black Romantics in the Da Club in Dublin, where she was known by fans of her widely acclaimed EP Une Femme simply as "la chanteuse". Now a mother of three, Jeannette is back on the scene with a new album, Café Diva, which brings her back to her roots - her grandmother was French - with a celebration of over 40 years of classic French tunes. There are lots you will already know such as Piaf's Non Je Ne Regrette Rien, as well as a less familiar, but no less glorious reworking of one of Piaf's last recordings T'e Beau Tu Sais (You're Beautiful You Know). "To have the chance to sing these songs has been my ambition for quite a while. They are songs that have stood the test of time," she says.
