The Women’s Podcast asks: ‘What do you want for Christmas?’

Each week on The Women’s Podcast we ask a question and this week, we’re hanging up our stockings and making lists. The question this week is ’what do you want for Christmas?’.

Guest presenter Anthea McTeirnan said she wanted an alarm clock because she is finding it increasingly hard to get out of bed in the morning. She’s not alone there. But we want our podcast listeners to think big. If money were no object what would you ask for? Or what present would you like that money can’t buy?

Last week’s question was sports related and we had a huge response. The question was: What is your favourite sporting moment involving a woman?

Aisling Warren from Meath emailed us to say: “My favourite sporting moment involving women or in this case I should say involving one woman, is when Katie Taylor won the gold at the London Olympics in 2012. The atmosphere here was incredible and people’s spirits were lifted at a dark time in this country’s history. I will always remember the roar of the people around me when she won. That was a special moment for women and Irish sporting history”

Angela Holohan tweeted to say that her favourite was Sonia O’Sullivan’s 1995 win at World Athletic Championships, “the first of her many magical sportingmoments for women.”

Elaine Buckley from Dublin wanted to mention a very recent, and also under-stated moment: “The Irish women’s hockey team beating world #5 team USA at the Hockey World League Olympic qualifiers back in June. Resilient in defence and clinical in attack, it was one of the greatest ever victories by an Irish hockey team, spearheaded by the powerhouse performance from Captain Megan Frazer.”

“Unfortunately they were denied their place in Rio by the post in a shootout against China in the subsequent qualification decider - but bring on the Green Army’s assault on qualification for the Hockey World Cup in London 2018.”

Jeanne Sutton had a controversial one: “Michelle Smith getting to keep the medals”

There was rugby moment from Lucy Keaveney who nominated Alison Millar’s try against Black Ferns in 2014 World Cup. ”The try came from a great break and pass from Niamh Briggs” she tweeted. Jess Keating also had rugby on her mind and said Ireland beating world champions New Zealand in World Cup 2014 was her favourite moment. “I still get goosebumps watching the match again”.
