Our Wedding Story: Getting the ring in Claddagh

Sorcha Turner, from Mullingar, and Cork man Dave Dennehy met in 2006 in Galway when she was studying at NUI Galway and he was at GMIT.

After graduation, they travelled together around South-east Asia, Australia and New Zealand, after which Sorcha qualified as a primary school teacher in Dublin and Dave worked in the motor industry in Cork.

In 2014, they moved in together in Ennis, Co Clare, and got engaged on January 13th – Sorcha’s birthday – that year at the Claddagh in Galway.

The couple feel “so lucky” to have been married by Fr Cormac Breathnach – a second cousin of the groom’s who also married his parents, Margot and Denis, 47 years ago, as well as his five older siblings – on August 8th, 2015, in St John’s Church, Cratloe.

Ciarán Collins and Jenny Dolan played hymns on the harp and violin during the ceremony. The bride’s mother Paula knitted the ring cushion carried by her nine-year old brother Thomas. Her sister Róisín (14) was a bridesmaid along with friends Katie Spencer and Sophie Carroll. Best man was Cathal Doorley and the groomsmen were Dave’s brother Rory and friend Eoin Quinlan.

Sorcha’s friend Paula Delehanty made the wedding cakes for the reception at the Armada Hotel in Co Clare, where Boogie Nights played into the night.

The newlyweds honeymooned in South Africa and the Seychelles and still live in Ennis with their dog Roy.
