From Michael to Dad: ‘Since you waved me off I have been keeping busy’

Michael Slowey, Dublin

Dear Dad,

I want to write this note to thank you for the last week. Its good that we spent that time together doing our man stuff that the women in our family don’t understand.

We will get that thing fixed just as soon as we can get spare parts. We just need to bide our time and be patient, as we have learned to be with each other.

I am sorry that I cut my finger and the blood dripped on your desk but thanks for the tenderness in cleaning the wound and putting a plaster on it. The wound has now cleared and digit number three is back in full working order.

We could not have had that quality time together when I was younger as I don’t think we understood each other.

We could not have had it in the years after I left home as I was busy rebelling against everything including common sense. But we had it over the last week and the memory will last. Since you waved me off I have been keeping busy, you know how it is, rushing around always needing to be somewhere else. You too needed to be somewhere else and I hope you got there and are with my brother, your brother and sister and parents and grandparents who I know you missed as much as I miss you now.

My only wish is that the last week was now and not 1997.
Your son, Michael
